Travel Girl

Hi, I’m Anya! I love traveling, and I love food, and I love traveling for food, so one of my favorite friends, Amy, decided to take a cute 5-day foodie trip to one of the most delicious cities I’ve ever been to. Our itinerary is to eat, eat, and eat a little more; I hope you like eating. So, if you love eating as much as we do, welcome to the food journey of a lifetime. Let’s dive in!

My First Taste of Bangkok: A City That Heals

Bangkok holds a very special place in my heart. A year ago, I was burnt out, lost, and unsure of what my life was becoming. After dropping out of school, I embarked on a solo journey, and Bangkok was my first destination. For me, it was a place of healing—where I started to rediscover myself.

I still vividly remember my first day. After 30 hours of travel, I found the city flooded and empty streets. It was like I had the whole town to myself. That day, jet-lagged and soaked, I roamed through temples and filled my belly. My first meal? I found a bowl of peppery noodle soup after passing the restaurant six times. The warm, flavorful broth soothed my soul and brought me back to life.

The Food Scene in Bangkok: A City That Never Stops Eating

Food brought me back to life, so it didn’t take much time for me to fall in love with the food scene here in Thailand. While New York is known as a city that never sleeps, Bangkok is a city that never stops eating. Bangkok isn’t just known for its vibrant nightlife—it’s a city that never stops eating.

After dropping off our bags at the hotel, we decided to indulge in our favorite hobby—eating—at a restaurant our friends highly recommended. They made us swear that we would try the best mushrooms of our lives here, claiming it was one of the best things they had eaten in Bangkok. However, we partially listened because while we didn’t find the life-changing mushrooms, we discovered a magical charred cabbage. I didn’t know I could be so impressed by cabbage, but this perfectly charred version drenched in a sweet and savory sauce was beyond delicious. I could honestly eat it every day—it was that good. If I were stuck on an island and could bring only one thing, it would be this charred cabbage. It’s simple but heavenly.

I ordered the Pad Thai, which I’ve never regretted ordering, and this one came with a mini fried crab, adding a unique crunch to the soft, sweet noodles. It was equally disturbing and intriguing, but I enjoyed every bite. Amy got a red curry packed with crab chunks and an entire chopped pumpkin, but she wasn’t a fan of the pumpkin. I ended up eating most of it, and honestly, there were moments I regretted my Pad Thai decision because her curry was 500 times better. It was hands down, the best thing I’ve ever eaten.

A 14-course Omakase Experience: A Culinary Adventure

The traffic here is pretty horrific. My solution is taking the Subway or, my personal favorite, the Uber bike. Scooting around the city was one of my favorite parts of the trip. It costs nothing and is fun, so we scootered to our 14-course Omakase dinner. One of the highlights of our trip was the 14-course Omakase dinner we had booked a month and a half in advance. Omakase is a dining experience where the chef controls the order and presentation of the meal. We started with a hot pink, smoky red Pilla juice to boost appetite and aid digestion. The following sushi was divine, especially the fried squid sushi with sweet soy sauce glaze. One of my favorites? A shrimp tempura with truffle salt. It was one of the top three things I’ve ever put in my mouth! The chef’s creative touches, like golden shrimp and uni (sea urchin) sushi, made every bite an unforgettable experience. I left feeling like I’d had the best sushi of my life—only $29!

It felt like I was stealing the sushi experience. Having visited Japan, this was hands down the best mass sushi I’ve ever had. Everything here deserves five stars, maybe even six. One piece, I think yellowtail fish, was topped with gold dusting and caviar—possibly the bougiest Spider Sushi I’ve ever tasted.
I love truffle-flavored anything, and the shrimp tempura with truffle salt was no exception. Truffle salt elevated it to one of the top three things I’ve ever eaten. The chef had us eat half as is, then dip the rest into a steamed egg custard and saffron-whipped cream. At that point, I fully trusted the chef—it was incredible. You could probably convince me to eat anything here.

Rediscovering Myself Through Food: A Year of Change

Reflecting on my journey, I realize how much I have changed in the last year. A year ago, I was burnt out, unhappy, and busy, and I thought my worth depended on my career and appearance. Solo travel to Bangkok forced me to confront these ideas. It helped me rediscover who I was outside of work and productivity, teaching me how to care for myself and achieve happiness.

Therapy played a significant role in this journey, giving me the courage to take a break, go solo traveling, and prioritize my mental health. I now believe that seeking therapy is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Exploring Local Flavors: A Food Tour Experience

I’ve learned that one of the best ways to explore a new city is through food tours. We embarked on a 4-5 hour journey, sampling local snacks and learning about Bangkok’s rich food history.

We began with pan-fried sticky mochi pancakes sI’veed with green chives and dipped in sweet—savoury sauce—so satisfying! Then came grilled coconut pork skewers, perfectly tender and flavorful. The peanut sauce Bangkok’ evenly.

Our adventure continued through dark alleys to find the best shrimp dumplings of my life—tender, chewy, and filled with sweetness. We also revisited the famous Red Stool Street Curry restaurant, featured on a Netflix show. The green curry and sweet Chinese sausage bites were unforgettable.

Reflections on Traveling Alone vs. With Friends

Traveling alone and with friends offers two very different experiences. When I was alone, I felt free and present. I made decisions on my schedule, embraced spontaneous adventures, and learned more about myself.

However, sharing these moments with friends brought a sense of connection, laughter, and fun. It’s a different kind of joy, but one I’m grateful for.

The Impact of Solo Traveling on My Life

Before solo traveling, I always chased milestones and followed a map that dictated my life. After my journey, my perspective shifted. I learned to be kind to myself and to value my existence beyond external validation.

Solo traveling didn’t give me meaning in life but gave me a deeper understanding of mine. It taught me to care for myself, listen, and find joy in the simple act of being.
